Please note that the base requires all volunteers to have proper identification which must be submitted at least 10 days prior entering the base. You will need to apply for a Volunteer pass at the Visitors Center at Camp Pendleton. Instructions for this will be sent to you when you sign up. Additionally you will need to bring a valid US Passport or Real ID driver license, Proof of Car Insurance and Car Registration to be able to drive on base.
Volunteers meet at the beach at Del Mar Jetty on Camp Pendleton off the 5 Freeway, exit at Oceanside Harbor/Camp Pendleton.
Please plan on arriving at the gate at 8:15 a.m. As you enter the checkpoint, stay to the right through the “Visitors Entrance.” Once through, STAY RIGHT and follow the signs to Wire Mountain Road, Del Mar Beach. This road will take you back over the 5 FWY and will continue North parallel to the FWY. Turn Left at 12th Street and enter Del Mar Beach Resort. Once at the beach, head south again with the ocean on your right to the end of the parking lot. WE MEET PAST THE MAIN LIFEGUARD TOWER (about 200-yards south) AT THE NEXT SET OF BATHROOMS NEAR THE LAST JETTY BEFORE THE MARINA. LOOK FOR THE JMMF TENTS.
Volunteers play an important role in making our Ocean Therapy sessions a success, please choose one of the following roles for the day that best suit your abilities:
This role helps to assist the Surf Instructor and the participant by retrieving boards in the water, helping participants to get through the waves and current, and acting as the in water ‘buddy’ to the participant to ensure safe instruction.
Requirements: Must be able to ocean swim. The volunteer will be in the water during instruction. Knowledge of how to properly handle a surfboard in waves is helpful.
Planning: Wear a bathing suit, please bring a wetsuit if you have one. Bring a towel and change of clothes.
This role provides instruction for how to surf and will work with one or two participants.
Requirements: Must have experience in surf instruction. Must know CPR.
Planning: Bring a wetsuit, a towel and change of clothes. Personal surfboard is optional and encouraged!
The beach coordinators (up to 5) will assist the Ocean Therapy Operations Manager with keeping the time schedule, making sure the volunteers and participants are properly signed in as well as assigned a Water Safety buddy and Surf Instructor. And, will help with organizing the lunches, watching items in the test, replenishing snacks and sunscreen, gathering rashguards, assist with set up and other tasks as assigned.
One to two volunteers needed to take photos and record moments for social media posting to the JMMF Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Requirements: Check in with the Operations Manager for instructions and direction.
