It is with incredible sadness that we share the passing of JMMF’s Program and Clinical Director, Kevin Sousa. Kevin battled melanoma in recent years and got the upper hand, but the cancer recently and aggressively spread to his brain and he unexpectedly passed on Friday May 26. Kevin was truly a selfless servant and amazing soul, counseling many in the South Bay through his private practice and bringing joy to countless through his incredible music. He was instrumental in developing and guiding JMMF’s world leading Ocean Therapy Program while training a team of Ocean Therapists that will carry on his legacy to continue bringing healing to the various populations we serve.
More information on his services, tributes and paddle out will be forthcoming. For now, if you want to honor Kev, go for a surf or grab your guitar…and don’t do it alone. Call a friend, check in on them, and offer them a word of encouragement and stoke…just like Kevin always did.
Please keep Patti (his wife), their family and our devasted JMMF team in your thoughts in prayers.
Take some time this Memorial Day to remember the sacrifice and bravery for all that have lost their life in serving our country. Call a veteran you know, write them a thank you note or if you get the opportunity, approach a veteran, active-duty military or first responder and thank them for their service. Click the link in our bio to sign up to volunteer at one of our upcoming Ocean Therapy sessions.
Kevin was a tireless servant for those that have served us. He led nearly all Ocean Therapy sessions with active-duty Marines in the Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendleton over the last five years. He also had a special connection with the addiction and recovery community of veterans in Coronado and absolutely loved helping them in their healing and recovery. Join us in celebrating Kevin and continuing his legacy at one of our upcoming military Ocean Therapy sessions.

Congratulations to Kathy Welch and the David Sliff Memorial Foundation for winning the amazing Hermosa Friends Foundation Quick Pitch event. As the winner last year, we know how important $10,000 can be to small community foundations. We are so grateful to the folks at the Friends Foundation for creating this innovative showcase for local non-profits. Kathy Welch and daughter Morgan Sliff have been part of our JMMF Family for years and have donated hours of time to our Ocean Therapy program. We are so proud of your amazing work on behalf of your beloved son and brother, David. Congrats to all the fabulous non-profits who shared their stories in the Quick Pitch.
